Plan Check Engineer

JOB TYPE: Full-Time

JOB DESCRIPTION:

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

    • Responsible for checking construction plans, specifications and calculations submitted for residential, commercial and industrial developments for compliance with state adopted codes and general conformity with applicable federal, state, and local ordinances, laws and regulations.

       
    • Works closely with and provides information to building departments, professional engineers, architects, contractors, and the general public regarding building code and other general requirements concerning buildings and other structures.

       
    • Prepares and maintains records of plan checking procedures.

       
    • Provides building code interpretations and education to local building officials, inspectors, and design professionals.

       
    • Keeps informed of new building construction methods, materials and requirements.

       
    • May make occasional field inspections to ensure that construction is in conformance with applicable codes and regulations.

       
    • Works under general supervision of the Senior Plan Check Engineer.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of:

    • The qualified candidate must have knowledge of: Principles and practices of structural engineering including the strength, properties and uses of materials in construction; pertinent codes, laws and regulations governing building construction; building construction practices and procedures; and plan checking techniques.

Ability to:

    • Must have the ability to read and interpret site plans, building plans, specifications, and calculations and determine compliance with appropriate codes and ordinances.

       
    • Examine and correct building plans, calculations and specifications in a rapid, uniform and accurate manner.

       
    • Express ideas and answer questions clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

       
    • Establish and maintain good working relationships with professional engineers, architects, contractors, developers, co-workers, and the general public.

       
    • Follow complex written and verbal instructions and procedures.

       
    • Work occasional irregular hours.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:

Any combination of experience, education, and training that has given the applicant specific knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities would be:

    • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in structural or civil engineering (or equivalent) with desired course work in properties of building materials, engineering mathematics, and stress and force analysis in wood, concrete and steel frame structures.

       
    • Possession of Engineer-in-Training certification (FE Exam).

       
    • Prefer two years experience performing structural, architectural, or civil engineering building design, review and inspection work related to building code compliance.

       
    • Possession of an ICC Plans Examiner Certification within 6 months.
