Dear Chapter Members,
As I am writing this Chapter letter this month, I am
also gazing out the window and enjoying the fall colors and the
great weather we are having lately. I am also daydreaming about a
pack trip into the
Book Cliffs on horseback that I am planning to do
this week. We truly do live in a beautiful and unique area.
Ok, I will quit daydreaming and get back to the
letter. How many times have you been asked, “Do I really need a
building permit?” or “Why do I have to have a building permit for
finishing my own basement?" First of all I will try and explain that
I will make the permit process a painless and hopefully a good
experience for them. If the experience is good for the homeowner, he
then will tell his neighbors
and hopefully more people will do the right thing
and submit for a building permit and we are able to achieve safer
remodels.I also, explain that their home is an investment. If your
home does not comply with the building codes, the value of your
investment could be reduced. Insurance companies may not cover work
done without permits and inspections.
A property owner, who can show that code
requirements were strictly met and have carefully maintained
records, has a strong ally if something happens that may result in a
lawsuit.
I then try and explain the hazards of unsafe
construction and safety issues and hopefully change their negative
views of building permits and building inspectors!
I hope each of us not only have a goal to achieve
safer buildings but also to work on good public relations with all
those we come in contact with each day.
Have a GREAT month and hope to see you at the
November 19
